The Electric Run
My Tips for the Electric Run
1.) If you have young children bring ear plugs – the music is incredibly loud
2.) It wouldn’t hurt to have some sort of light with you, as the path at the Raleigh run was pitch black between some of the courses
3.) Not really a tip but suggestion: To save money party city and sometimes Walmart have glow in the dark products that are cheaper than the same exact ones sold at the race. If you are looking for glow in the dark body paint – Spencer’s Gifts sells a 4 pack.
4.) There was a groupon available for this run BUT it was offered after the initial price increased. For example the price to register was $40 and after a month it increased to $50 and another month it went up again. That was when the groupon became available so it basically cut it back down to the $40. It wouldn’t save you any if you signed up early.
FAQs
*Kids of all ages are welcome to the race. When I ran there were babies being pushed in strollers and toddlers running beside their parents. If they are under 8yrs old they are free but will NOT receive a race day packet.
*The race day packet includes a shirt, a bib (your ticket into the event), LED bracelet and glow in the dark sunglasses
*Packet pick up is the day before the race and you have to bring your ID to get your packet. If a friend or teammate is picking up the packet you must sign a waiver giving permission.
*The electric run is a 5k which is 3.1 miles
*Pets are not allowed
*Glow sticks, body paint, glow in the dark shirts etc. are sold at the race and at the electric run’s online store www.electricwear.com
*Depending on your location there will be 5-7 courses. There is no guarantee a certain
course will be at your event.
course will be at your event.
*Water is given at the halfway mark
*You can sign up on their website for email notifications when they will host a race in your area. The link to the official website as well as their facebook is above
*There are booths at the end where you can buy food and drinks. For those that were 21+ and had their ID you could get beer. At the event in Raleigh the accepted cash only
*The race ended at 11:30pm – I am not sure for all but for the race in Raleigh there was an after party at a club downtown for those old enough to attend
*Lastly there are NO REFUNDS so if you sign up months in advance and the day of the race you are sick or injured you cannot get your money back. You can however transfer your registration to another person, so if a friend or family member would like to take over for you.
My personal experience
The Electric Run is the most recent 5k that I participated in on Friday, September 19 at the State Fair Grounds in Raleigh, NC.
Much like with the color me rad 5k you register online, I will include a link below, the earlier you register the cheaper the price. It is also cheaper if you sign up as a group and groupon coupons were available for the race as well.
A day before the race you pick up your packets OR if you chose to pay extra you could have the packet delivered to your doorstep. It was required when picking up the packet to show ID or if a team member was picking up your packet you had to sign a release form saying you gave that person permission.
The packets included a shirt, a blinking bracelet, glow in the dark sunglasses, and a bib with your number (this is your ticket into the event). The Electric Run has an online store, as well as booths at the event where you can buy more merchandise from glow in the dark body paints, glow in the dark bracelets and necklaces etc. Taking the cheaper route I went to Wal-mart and in the Halloween section they have bulk packaging of glow in the dark jewelry. If you do this run at another time of the year Party City is another good option to stock up on your glow wardrobe. People also wear crazy makeup and dress up in costumes.

The night of the race there was a lot of traffic, more than there as with the color me rad 5k. They didn’t have volunteers or attendants to help parking. Parking was anywhere you could basically find a spot and in some areas there were very small lanes and had people driving right towards each other.
Once parking was out of the way we walked to the main gates and followed everyone else to the start line. Music was playing and everyone was taking pictures of everyone’s costumes. The event had people of all ages, literally babies being pushed in strollers to senior citizens.

I will say, in my opinion, it wasn’t the best race for children to be at. First of all the music is incredibly loud. It is a lot of fun and really one big party but for children I think it was too loud. If you want to bring your son or daughter that is 6 years old or younger I’d suggest ear plugs. There were quite a few people pushing strollers/running with strollers as well and we ran over a lot of gravel and a few people had to stop because rock were getting stuck in the wheels.
There were several courses that were a lot of fun, beautifully decorated and brightly lit up. The first course was electro rainforest, followed by sweet tooth acres, under the sea, rainbow road, and rockstar powerhouse. That leads to the finish line which is a huge stage, speakers, a DJ, dancers and loud music. They have a few booths with food: hot dogs, pizza and pretzels. This particular race only took cash, no debt cards. For those that were 21 and older you could buy beer at the end. Younger crowd got energy drinks, lemonade or water.
My one complaint would’ve been how dark it was. Obviously it is a glow in the dark run but between the courses it was so dark it was hard to see the path in front of us. There were actually volunteers in those places saying “Watch for the gravel” “Look out for the fence” “Turn left” because we could see where we were going.
