Sweat Fest Sunday

I've mentioned before I'm not really into the gym......for a number of reasons, 1st I don't drive and 2nd I don't have the extra cash right now. The plus side is you can do workouts at home and get the same results for free.

Last sunday I posted some jump rope routines, the sunday before that some HiiT workouts but what if you're not into that?  Today, I am going to post some dance routines/dance workouts that are not only fun but will burn calories and kill your legs.

Enjoy!

Are you into Dancing with the Stars? Maybe a fan of the new judge and former pro dancer Julianna Hough? This video is for you:

If you want something a bit more fast paced but you're not so coordinated....this is part walking, part dancing:

Musical Monday

I believe the best way to pass time while working out is either by watching TV, read a book or magazine (which I've done and nearly walked off the side of the treadmill) or listen to music. The faster the music the better. It keeps me moving and I stay focused on my elliptical or whatever I may be doing so I don't fall off.

Depending on your tastes in music what you listen to here a few top rated playlists from fitness magazine SHAPE!

If you are into rap music then this is for you:
Childish Gambino - Sweatpants
Will.I.Am, Miley Cyrus, French Montana, Wiz Khalifa & DJ Mustard - Feelin' Myself
Nicki Minaj - Anaconda
Juicy J, Wale & Trey Songz - Bounce It
Big Sean, Lil Wayne & Jhene Aiko - Beware
Iggy Azalea & Rita Ora - Black Widow
Schoolboy Q - Man of the Year
Hoodie Allen - Show Me What You're Made Of
Major Lazer & Pharrell Williams - Aerosol Can
Far East Movement & Riff Raff - The Illest

If rock music is more your style:
Welcome to the Jungle – Guns N’ Roses
Greed - Godsmack
Head Like a Hole - Nine Inch Nails
Nookie - Limp Bizkit
More Than Human - White Zombie
Testify - Rage Against The Machine
Enter Sandman - Metallica
Highway To Hell - AC/DC
(sic) - Slipknot
Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin
Bawitdaba - Kid Rock

Sweat Fest Sunday

So........say you don't have the time to go to the gym. Or maybe you don't the money. Personally, I share a car and time just isn't on my side when it comes to the gym. Nor is paying for a gym membership. I am aiming to save money to move when I graduate next year. While I sometimes miss out on weight training there is ZERO excuse as you why you can't do cardio. You can run around the park or speed walk up and down your street. There are plenty of workout videos you can buy but if you want to go the cheaper route - go to youtube. Above is a video by Pilates instructor Cassey Ho. Her main focus is pilates and yoga but at times she does post cardio videos. The one above is great for a beginner. You don't have to do it all at once, you can stop and take breaks. It doesn't mean you're a failure - the whole point is to get it done to the best of your ability.

Cassey Ho may not be your cup of tea, she talks a lot and is incredibly upbeat. Sometimes I think she may have inhaled a couple of 5 hour energies before filming BUT I will take her over Jillian Michaels any day. No disrespect to Jillian she seems to be a kick ass trainer but I rather have a perky personality teaching me than feel like I am in boot camp and getting screamed at. To each their own. Below is another cardio workout by Cassey that is a bit more challenging

S....M...T...W.....Th...F...S

I have decided a unique way to add to this blog in hopes everyone will find it helpful or at least interesting to follow. Everyday will focus on something new:

Sweat Fest Sunday
Musical Monday
Tasty Tuesday
Wardrobe Wednesday
Thirsty Thursday
Fitness/Foodie Friday
Sleepy Saturday

Sweat Fest Sunday - I will be posting quick workout videos that don't take much of your time and are relatively easy even for a beginner. Remember, you don't have to do the entire video straight through. Breaks are okay as long as you keep going

Musical Monday - I have googled and found top rated playlists that go with every kind of workout

Tasty Tuesday - Healthy recipes to make at home. A big thing I never noticed was how incredibly bad restaurant food is. Not to mention boxed foods you buy at the grocery store. Restaurants give 2-4x the recommending serving size. Or just have additives that don't make sense. I can make a veggie burger at home for 160 calories yet Red Robin serves a veggie burger w/ a bun that comes in a nearly 1,000 calories. One wouldn't think (if they didn't look at the nutrition label online) that a single burger would equate to nearly half of their allotted calories for the day.

Wardrobe Wednesday - I will post cute workout clothes

Thirsty Thursday - Smoothies and healthy juices and their benefits. These are not juices to replace meals. I would never recommend that.

Fitness Foodie Friday - Will vary from Friday to Friday but this will be workout videos and tips along with some facts about food you may not know and some recipes from time to time.

Sleepy Saturday - Absolutely nothing. Relax veg out, rest and be lazy. I may post quotes, pictures or something random.

My Fitness Pal - It's free

So you want to start your journey to get healthy and maybe even do a 5k in the near future. While I am not a personal trainer, or even an avid runner I can give some tips. You know why? Because I was in your shoes and still am. We are all beginners at some point and time and I think it is important that when you make the decision to get healthy that you have support. Sometimes that support system doesn't come in the form of friends and family but maybe in an online community.

My fitness pal is literally one of the best things ever. First thing is first, when you decide to be healthy it isn't dieting, changing the way you eat isn't a short term thing it has to be a life style change. My Fitness Pal is weight watchers for the poor college student - or just someone that doesn't want to spent money. That is right, it is FREE!

When you join my fitness pal you register with an email address and password.  Then it will ask you a few questions such as:
Height
Current Weight
Goal Weight
Male or Female
Date of Birth
Your level of activity: Sedentary, Lightly Active, Active, and Very Active
How many times a week and for how long you plan to work out
How much do you want to lose weekly

Once all of that is filled out the website will come up you a plan for you to follow. It will give you an allotted amount of calories you should eat and how many you should burn. How many carbs, how much protein, fats sugars etc. Then it is your job to actually track that. It may sound like a lot of work but it's really not. My fitness pal has an app that is free to download for androids and iPhones. You log in with the same email and password you use on the website. Whenever you eat something you click which meal it is for Breakfast and Add Food

and in the upper right corner there is a picture of a barcode.

You click on the barcode and your camera come up. You take the picture of the barcode on the food you are eating and boom its subtracts those calories from your daily amount. This is what your food diary will look like once you add in your food. Notice the top it tells me how many calories I should eat, how many I have ate and how many I have left.

The website and apps also have a section where you can log in your workouts and water consumption. Fitbit can also link to myfitnesspal making it even easier .

I should also note this site offers message boards so you can support other members also on this healthy lifestyle journey and they can support you. You can make your profile private as well so nobody has to know how much you weigh or what your goal weight is.

My story...

So, I am starting this blog as part of a school assignment. I originally started a blog on tumblr but was not pleased with the set up. I decided to try something new. The exact theme of the blog was originally running 5ks because I have done two of them and my teacher thought it would be interesting to talk about a 5k from my point of view. Thing is I've only done two and there is only so much you can say and only so many people that really care and would be interested. I've decided to expand the purpose of my blog and that is to be a healthier you, and to love yourself - something I still work towards every day.

I am kind of dreading this because this means I will be putting myself out there for anyone that happens to see this. My name is Sierra - I think you should know that by my profile and I am a college student at East Carolina University in North Carolina.

Weight is something that has been a huge source of pain for me and sadly takes up more of my time than it should. I remember as a child hearing family members compete over who could lose 10lbs the quickest, argue over who was in the double digits (meaning a size 10 in pants), I remember seeing a family participate in some not so healthy practices so they wouldn't gain weight.

I was a thin child. I was just small in general and I was very active. I grew up in Arizona so I was a water baby and constantly swimming. I also did gymnastics for a little while and cheerleading when I was young and moved to North Carolina.

The first time I really gained weight I was 7 years old and went to visit my father (my parents are divorced) and I spent the summer with him. He was clueless as to what to feed me but I do think he tried. Most kids like sweets so that is what I was fed. For most kids it would have been a dream because he gave me pork rinds, chips and dip, ice cream, honeybuns, and cotton candy. He would attempt to make me sandwiches out of white bread, mayo and pepperoni. Needless to say I came home a chubby little kid. Thankfully I lost pretty much all of it as soon as I got back to eating normal foods.

The second time I experienced weight gain I was around 13 years old and had horrible migraines. I was put on a medication with a side effect of weight gain. I don't know how much I gained but I literally blew up like a balloon. Mind you, as an adult I am 5'3 so I was probably shorter at that age - it didn't take a lot of weight to make me look huge. I was going into high school, I wanted to look nice, for guys to like me and to be popular. I developed an eating disorder that would change my life. Below is a picture from 8th grade, I am in the front with the red jersey and faded jeans.

It didn't help because my family wasn't supportive. It was all in my mind, and I was exaggerating. I had one aunt that was so scared I wasn't eating enough that she would pile food on my plate and tell me it was okay to eat. Another aunt that took me out to eat and I threw up in a walmart bathroom after. I would sometimes hear things about my weight because, well I was overweight. It wasn't and isn't healthy but nobody understood the very serious, and insanely detrimental thoughts that occupied my mind. It wasn't as simple as 'Oh lose weight' it was an unhealthy obsession so while people tried to help it was doing the exact opposite.

A lot of people think an eating disorder is kind of just a warped thought process and people with it are exaggerating. That only thin people have eating disorder, how can you be fat and so worried about your weight? Or be so consume and not lose weight? It's deeper than that. It's hating yourself to the point you don't think you're worthy. It's hating yourself to the point you don't care if you die. I'm not stupid and it's been proven most people with eating disorder are relatively smart. Maybe not at first but eventually we know what we're doing to our bodies is causing more harm than good. Part of us can't stop because we became addicted to it, it's kind of like alcoholism and is a mental disorder and the other part just thinks we deserve the pain.

There was no middle ground for me. I either didn't eat at all or I over ate and made myself sick. For years I couldn't find a balance and I was not only destroying my life but also my body.

It took me what felt like forever to basically get a grip. My goal now is not to be thin but just to be healthy. I learned being thin doesn't always equal health - trust me. I, at some point, want to do indoor rock climbing and I am going to need a lot of strength to do that. I want to take a pole dancing class, again I will need strength and endurance. Over the past year I've completed two 5ks, that is something I would've never been able to do when I was sick.

Now, one of the challenges I face when I tell people I am healthy, and that I know what I am doing, and I know what my body needs is  they look at me like I am crazy. I have lost credibility because of the eating disorder. How can someone with a warped mindset, someone that used to starve themselves really know about eating healthy? Or someone that still isn't at a healthy weight know anything about healthy eating? There is more than meets the eye. While the eating disorder took so much from me it also gave me a sense of awareness I never had before. I pay attention to what I am putting in my body and I listen to my body. Seeing my hair and nails growing I know I am healthy from the inside out.

This blog will be for those of us starting a new path towards a healthy lifestyle. I will share my common mistakes, how I got started, my setbacks and more. I will post about people I look up to and 'interviews' with people on the same journey as us. I will post apps to help you get started and separate pages dedicated to 5ks that you can do to celebrate your health.
