My Fitness Pal - It's free

So you want to start your journey to get healthy and maybe even do a 5k in the near future. While I am not a personal trainer, or even an avid runner I can give some tips. You know why? Because I was in your shoes and still am. We are all beginners at some point and time and I think it is important that when you make the decision to get healthy that you have support. Sometimes that support system doesn't come in the form of friends and family but maybe in an online community.

My fitness pal is literally one of the best things ever. First thing is first, when you decide to be healthy it isn't dieting, changing the way you eat isn't a short term thing it has to be a life style change. My Fitness Pal is weight watchers for the poor college student - or just someone that doesn't want to spent money. That is right, it is FREE!

When you join my fitness pal you register with an email address and password.  Then it will ask you a few questions such as:
Height
Current Weight
Goal Weight
Male or Female
Date of Birth
Your level of activity: Sedentary, Lightly Active, Active, and Very Active
How many times a week and for how long you plan to work out
How much do you want to lose weekly

Once all of that is filled out the website will come up you a plan for you to follow. It will give you an allotted amount of calories you should eat and how many you should burn. How many carbs, how much protein, fats sugars etc. Then it is your job to actually track that. It may sound like a lot of work but it's really not. My fitness pal has an app that is free to download for androids and iPhones. You log in with the same email and password you use on the website. Whenever you eat something you click which meal it is for Breakfast and Add Food

and in the upper right corner there is a picture of a barcode.

You click on the barcode and your camera come up. You take the picture of the barcode on the food you are eating and boom its subtracts those calories from your daily amount. This is what your food diary will look like once you add in your food. Notice the top it tells me how many calories I should eat, how many I have ate and how many I have left.

The website and apps also have a section where you can log in your workouts and water consumption. Fitbit can also link to myfitnesspal making it even easier .

I should also note this site offers message boards so you can support other members also on this healthy lifestyle journey and they can support you. You can make your profile private as well so nobody has to know how much you weigh or what your goal weight is.
